A New Beginning: How to Start Over After A Long Pause In Your Book Writing Journey

 October 1, 2022

By  Benecia Ponder

Yesterday, I opened my Zoom room to offer free book coaching to the Inspirational Authors community. I answered questions about book format, copyright, self-publishing, and book marketing. I even listened to chapters and edited stories. It was amazing!

Just as I was about to close the room, a new face popped on the screen. She told me she almost didn’t come. “I don’t have a book project right now,” she said.

When I asked her how I could help, she told me about the book she wanted to write. She told me she’d started to write a few years ago but stopped when life got too hectic. She wanted to write the book but didn’t know if she could.

“How do I start again?” she asked.

I felt her frustration. I’ve started over many times in my life. It’s definitely not an easy place to be.

If you’re facing a starting over moment, I hope my advice to her will help you too…

First, know there is no shame in starting over or beginning again. Life happens. Give yourself some grace.

Second, starting over does not mean starting from scratch. If you started before, you have experience. You know what worked and most importantly, you know what didn’t work. You can bring these insights with you on your new journey and avoid the pitfalls of the past.

My new friend and I spent several minutes chatting about her past book writing expenene. I asked her to write down the lessons she learned. Then, I asked her, “Have you learned anything else in the past few years?”

That sparked a whole new conversation as she realized that her experiences over the past two years have given her even more content for her book.

She left the call excited to have a fresh start!

As we revel in the awesomeness of new beginnings and fresh starts, let’s also be grateful for everything that brought us to this point.

I too, had open office hours yesterday. it is a great experience being available to help others and seeing who shows up.
